Are GLP-1 Medications Safe and Effective? What the Research Actually Shows

2 min read

If you've asked Google, Instagram, or a friend whether GLP-1 medications like Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro, or Zepbound are "safe," you've probably gotten wildly different answers depending on who's talking.

As a Functional Medicine Practitioner, my goal isn't to tell you these medications are good or bad. It's to help you understand what the research actually shows so you can make an informed decision with your provider, not a decision based on fear or hype.

Here's what's real:

Large clinical trials have shown genuine, measurable benefits. In the STEP 1 trial, adults with obesity who took semaglutide (2.4 mg) lost close to 15% of their body weight over 68 weeks, compared to placebo. And in the more recent SELECT trial, semaglutide reduced major cardiovascular events by 20% in adults with overweight or obesity and existing heart disease - even in people who didn't have diabetes.

That's not nothing. For many people, these medications have meant better blood sugar control, real weight loss, and hope after years of struggling with other approaches.

But here's the part that gets left out of the conversation: Weight loss is not automatically the same as health gain.

When appetite drops dramatically, which is exactly how these medications work; food intake usually drops with it. And when food intake drops, it's easy to unintentionally lose more than fat. Protein, fiber, minerals, vitamins, and overall nutrient density can all take a hit if there isn't an intentional plan in place.

So is the medication "working"?

The scale might say yes. But the better question is: what kind of weight are you losing, and what's happening underneath the number?

That's the question this whole series is going to help you answer. Over the next few weeks, we're going to dig into:

  1. What's actually happening to your muscle mass on these medications (and why it matters more than most people realize)

  2. Why digestion, motility, and gallbladder health become so important

  3. The nutrient gaps that show up, and how to close them

  4. What happens if you stop and how to build a plan that lasts

My take, as a practitioner: GLP-1 medications can be a powerful tool. But a tool is only as good as the plan around it. Health decisions are personal, and they should always be made with a qualified medical provider. My role is to help you look at the whole picture, not just the number on the scale.
